About the Author
Jana Kohl is a writer, artist, psychologist and animal welfare advocate. Having worked for the Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies for many years, she has long been concerned with how cruelty can become legally sanctioned by society. As a psychologist, she has testified before the Illinois State Legislature on the link between industrialized violence toward animals and inter-human violence. When she learned of the abuse of animals in animal-based industries, such as factory farming, the fur industry, and puppy mills, she turned her attention to advocating for national reform.
She has participated in numerous animal welfare campaigns, most notably the one that banned the sale of "foie gras" in her hometown of Chicago. (A year after the law was passed in a landslide 48-1 victory, Mayor Daley and Alderman Tom Tunney, at the behest of the Illinois Restaurant Association, overturned the ban in an alleged illegal violation of parliamentary procedure.)
Jana splits her time between the West coast and the Midwest. In addition to Baby, she also has an 18 year-old adopted cat named Kitty Pie.
